  1. The metric system is a system of weights and 
  2. measures developed in France in the 18th 
  3. century and recognized by other countries in 
  4. the 19th century. In 1960 an international 
  5. conference on weights and measures 
  6. recommended the universal adoption of a 
  7. revised International System (Système 
  8. International d'Unités, or SI), with seven 
  9. prescribed `base units': the metre (m) for 
  10. length, kilogram (kg) for mass, second (s) 
  11. for time, ampere (A) for electric current, 
  12. kelvin (K) for thermodynamic temperature, 
  13. candela (cd) for luminous intensity, and mole 
  14. (mol) for quantity of matter.
